FG alerts Nigerians over outbreak of anthrax in Zamfara || Peakvibez.com

The Federal Government, through the Federal Ministry of Livestock, has informed the public of the confirmed outbreak of anthrax on a farm in Zamfara State.

This was announced in a statement issued by the Director of Information and Public Relations at the Federal Ministry of Livestock, Mr Ben Bem Goon, on Tuesday, January21.

Goon said the development called for heightened vigilance and proactive measures to mitigate the risks associated with the disease. Anthrax is caused by Bacillus anthracis and is a zoonotic disease that can infect a variety of warm-blooded animals, including cattle, sheep, goats, horses and wild animals, as well as humans.

The disease is listed as a notifiable disease by the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) due to its high morbidity and mortality.

Symptoms of anthraxin animals and humans include fever, cough, vomiting, nausea, diarrhoea, sore throat, swollen lymph nodes, headache, itching and bleeding from large holes.

Anthrax can be prevented through concerted measures such as risk assessment, testing and ring vaccination of susceptible animals in high-risk areas, but rapid detection and response are essential to stop the spread.

Following the outbreak, the ministry called on stakeholders, especially Zamfara and neighbouring states, to take immediate action to prevent further spread of the disease.

“We urge the public to remain vigilant, report any unusual illnesses in animals or humans, and adhere to all preventive guidelines issued by relevant authorities.

“The Federal Ministry of Livestock Development remains committed to collaborating with all stakeholders to ensure a swift and effective response,” Goong said.
